Riddle by a Sea Cow

manatee, sea cow
Manatee, sea cow

'Tis on an open sea I wade
Corals, my sea-green jade
Those fellow finned do flow by me
Ne'er see my smile wrinkly

I'm
A forgotten
Lost
Creature from eons past

And yet, I do exist today
To show the world how they
Killed a History that was gold
Now beauty's obscured, sold.

Although mermaids are an imaginary creature known to exist in the past, there still exists an aquatic mammal that might well have been the source of this imagination! Very close to mermaids, we have the Manatee, or the sea cows! Well I don't mean close to the beauty and booty of the mermaids.

  1. This was fin-tastic! I do think that manatees have a graceful beauty, like mermaids. A thoughtful and well-done poem!

  2. I love this. You did a beautiful job on the challenge, and told a story about a really interesting creature. I had heard that sailors of old may have mistaken sea cows as mermaids; I can imagine that a man who had been on a ship at sea with only other men for company, for months, might look out at the ocean and make that mistake!

Sea cows are endangered now by propeller boats. hope that regulations can be or have been made in order to help them.

"Ne'er see my smile wrinkly" made me laugh delightedly!

    1. hehehehe I wrote this line over n over about 30 times! I didn't want to be the one being slapped by the strict teacher! ;)

I love all challenges, Fireblossom, as I loved doing this one. Oh I really hope sea cows don't get extinct. Mankind isn't kind on other living things apparently. Thanks a lot for this challenge and your views.

  3. Enjoyed this very much. As Fireblossom says, your wrinkly line was quirky and brought your message home with a little humor in the bag as well--and overall, the poem is just delightful.

  7. Oh, I love your topic!! Important to open other's eyes to these creatures that could so easily become an image in a history book. SO sad. Great job with this challenge, Chhavi!

  11. What a beautiful topic to write about. It breaks my hart that so many of these creatures have been lost. I pray we don't lose all of them.
